ZC2: Sailing holiday along the Highlands & Caledonian Canal
From Peterhead we will sail around Ratray head into the Moray Firth. A desolate area with fishing harbors, but also lots of wild life. With a bit of luck we might see dolphins and maybe even killer whales. Our ports of call will depend on the weather and tide, but the atmospheric harbor of Whitehills, will certainly be included.
Via a beautiful anchorage we sail into the Caledonian Canal at Inverness. The Caladonian Channel is a beautiful route, right through the Highlands. An ever-changing landscape highlighted by the play of light and clouds. We will also sail over Loch Ness, although we can not guarantee that we will see the monster.
Depending on the wind, we could anchor on Loch Ness for a visit to the ruins of Urquhart Castle. Via Fort Augustus we go through several locks up and down again. The locks are almost all located closely after each other, like a kind of staircase (Neptune’s stair case). Nice and spectacular. Between the locks there is also space for sailing and after sailing there is time for a nice stroll along the canal.
The landscape is getting more and more beautiful as we proceed, with higher mountains and more rugged scenery. At Fort William we sail out to the West Coast of Scotland. Along the highest mountain of the U.K., the Ben Nevis. After the Caledonian Canal, we will probably anchor somewhere for the night, with again, beautiful views over the Scottish Highlands. The next day we sail over to the charming and famous village of Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, full of colorful houses and some nice shops. The last day we will sail to Oban, a nice trip and in the evening we go out for dinner.
The above schedule is subject to weather, wind and tide.
The daily sailing distances are between 25 and 47 miles.
