W05: Sailing holidays western Canary islands.
With a constant North Easterly wind and with the spring-like temperature at this time of year, perfect sailing conditions are ensured at the Canary Islands. The first day we plan to sail to the island of “La Gomera”. Between La Gomera and Tenerife lies a wind acceleration zone, which provides spectacular sailing conditions. Our destination is most probably the charming town of San Sebastian, where we plan to stay a day for an excursion inland. In the middle of the island lies the “Parque Nacional de Garajonay”, wich has one of the oldest forests in the world. With its huge heather trees, laurel trees and deep ravines, this forest resembles no other forest in Europe. The altitude provides a wonderful view over the almost magical cloud cover that keeps nature so beautifully deep green here.
On the next day we will sail further to the north side of Tenerife. Through the wind acceleration zone into the shelter of Tenerife. In the lee of Tenerife, there is a high chance to see pilot whales, a “smaller” whale species. Then, we have planned two beautiful long sailing days. First to the island of La Palma, where we will spend a day for a beautiful walk. And next to the West side of La Gomera, to “Valle Gran Rey”. A fishing harbor with an impressive red cliffs. The narrow alleys in the village lead to a bar with a beautiful view over the ocean, the perfect place for a sunset and tapas.
From there we will cross over to “El Hierro”, another perfect day of ‘broad reach’sailing. This beautiful island is far from the mainstream tourist route because it has no airport.
We sail back to Tenerife via the south side of La Gomera. This sailing voyage has the same start as end port.
The daily sailing distances are between 18 and 54 miles. The above schedule is subject to weather, wind and tide.
